Hearing loss assessment and treatment

Treatment depends on the cause and degree of hearing loss. Wax or middle-ear disease may be treatable; inner-ear damage may need hearing devices and communication support. A sudden change should not wait for a routine appointment.

When might this service be appropriate?

  • Hearing difficulty in one/both ears or difficulty understanding speech
  • Childhood hearing concerns, prelingual deafness and speech delay

How is it assessed?

  • History, noise/medication exposure, ear examination and age-appropriate audiometry, with tympanometry or OAE/ABR as needed.
  • Unilateral/asymmetric hearing loss may need further investigation.

How is care planned?

  • Cause-directed treatment, hearing-aid fitting, assistive devices and communication strategies.
  • Selected severe/profound loss may need implant-team assessment; language support for children should be planned promptly.

When is prompt or emergency care needed?

  • Seek same-day assessment for sudden hearing loss. Facial/limb weakness or slurred speech requires emergency care.

Frequently asked questions

Is an online hearing test enough?

No. A screening tool does not replace clinical examination and formal hearing tests.
