Oral and tongue conditions

Mouth lesions can arise from injury, infection, inflammation or other causes. Similar-looking lesions may need different treatment; a persistent lesion may require biopsy.

Which concerns are assessed?

  • Oral and aphthous ulcers; cheek, tongue, lip and gum ulcers
  • Leukoplakia and oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF)
  • Oral lichen planus and candidiasis
  • Oral tumour/cancer consultation and selected surgery

How is it assessed?

  • Review duration, pain, trauma and tobacco/areca-nut exposure, with mouth and neck examination.
  • Biopsy and indicated imaging may be needed for suspicious or persistent lesions.

How is care planned?

  • Cause-directed treatment, removal of irritants and planned follow-up; cancer requires multidisciplinary planning.

When is prompt or emergency care needed?

  • An ulcer lasting over 3 weeks, a firm/growing lesion, a neck lump or swallowing difficulty needs prompt assessment. Breathing difficulty or heavy bleeding is an emergency.

For a life-threatening emergency, seek emergency care or call 999 in Bangladesh.
