- Significant nasal obstruction associated with septal deviation
- Selected need for access during other nasal surgery
How is it assessed?
- Nasal examination/endoscopy and assessment of turbinates, allergy and the nasal valve; CT is not needed for everyone.
How is care planned?
- Medical care may help inflammation/allergy, but sprays do not straighten deviated cartilage.
- The septum is usually approached internally; packing/splints are selected. External shape correction may require septorhinoplasty.
What follow-up and recovery care is needed?
- Early blockage, crusting and mild blood-stained discharge can occur. Follow discharge instructions about nose blowing, exercise and splints.
Which risks and limitations should be discussed?
- Bleeding, infection, septal perforation, adhesions or persistent obstruction; uncommon shape change.
When is prompt or emergency care needed?
- Heavy/persistent fresh bleeding, increasingly painful blockage, fever or breathing difficulty needs urgent care.
