Endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS)

FESS uses an endoscope through the nose to treat selected sinus disease and improve drainage/access. It may be considered when problems persist despite appropriate medical care. Inflammation control and follow-up may continue afterwards.

When might this service be appropriate?

  • Selected chronic rhinosinusitis, polyps or other sinus disease
  • Persistent symptoms affecting daily life

How is it assessed?

  • Review symptoms, nasal endoscopy, CT, allergy/asthma and previous treatment.

How is care planned?

  • Discuss saline, appropriate topical treatment and selected other medical options; CT appearance alone does not require surgery.
  • The extent of surgery depends on diagnosis and anatomy.

What follow-up and recovery care is needed?

  • Follow prescribed saline/spray and cleaning visits, with individual activity advice. Rinses require safe water.

Which risks and limitations should be discussed?

  • Bleeding, infection, scarring and persistent/recurrent symptoms; rare eye injury, visual change or CSF leak.

When is prompt or emergency care needed?

  • Eye swelling/visual change, severe headache, heavy bleeding or persistent clear drainage needs urgent assessment.

For a life-threatening emergency, seek emergency care or call 999 in Bangladesh.

Frequently asked questions

Will nasal sprays be unnecessary after FESS?
